BDP district mayor-elect injured in armed attack in southeastern Turkey

The Peace and Democracy Party’s (BDP) Emin Irmak, who was selected as the mayor of the Artuklu district of Mardin, has been wounded in an armed attack.

Irmak was reportedly shot in the back when he arrived in Artuklu’s Gökçe village, where his relatives reside, in order to reconcile people and their nemeses.

Two other people were also wounded in the attack as they were taken to the Mardin State hospital.
Gendarmerie forces have taken security measures in the village and an investigation has been launched into the incident.

Irmak won the election in the district with 25,895 votes, while the ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) Serdal Yay came second with 25,306 votes.
