BODRUM

Aydın Doğan (R) joined judges, who have spent the past two days in Bodrum, where they selected the winner over a day-long session.

Doğan Holding honorary chairman Aydın Doğan attended a dinner event on June 18 with the judges in the Aydın Doğan cartoon contest, in honor the 30th anniversary of the organization. The judges included Adolf Born, Brad Holland, Robert Mankoff, Arita Kunz, Ralph Steadman, Selçuk Demirel, Latif Demirci, Piyale Madra and Ercan Akyol.

Doğan joined the mix of Turkish and foreign judges, who have spent the past two days in the Aegean province of Muğla’s Bodrum, where they selected the winner over a day-long session.

The foreign judges were selected in accordance with the history of the contest as most of the figures have judged in previous years, as in the case of Steadman and Born. Doğan chatted with the judges, sharing past experiences and commentaries with regard to the event, which remains a one-of-its-kind event in the country.

The foreign judges in particular seemed glad to finally put a face to the name and learn more about the man behind the event.

The judges were also hosted by Bodrum Mayor Mehmet Kocadon the previous night as part of the ongoing events, and also joined local children in the town center for a drawing session.

The organization is known for bringing the A-listers of illustration and cartoons, Turkish and foreign, for its selective commission, which pares down a list of hundreds of contestants to an honorary list of 15 names. The top three win substantial monetary prizes. Polish artist Krzysztof Grzondziel had the victorious cartoon, which depicts a soldier missing a leg amid signature statues of world history, emerging as the winner this year after session in which the judges voted on the 234 finalists.
