Austria demands extradition from Turkey over terror videos

Vienna prosecutors have requested the extradition of an Austrian arrested recently in Turkey and wanted for alleged terror activities. The man, named as Mohamed M. and already jailed in Austria in 2008 for producing terror videos, was arrested in late March in Hatay province in southern Turkey.

"He is wanted for involvement in a terror group... for activities on the Internet for which he was already found guilty and which he continued (after serving his sentence)," prosecution spokesman Thomas Vecsey told AFP. When the suspect might be extradited was still unclear and depended on the Turkish authorities, Vecsey said.

Mohamed M., a Viennese of Egyptian origin in his 20s, was jailed in 2008 for four years after producing a video threatening Austria and Germany with attacks if the two countries did not withdraw their troops from Afghanistan.

The clip included threats against several targets during the European football championship -- which took place in Austria and Switzerland in June 2008 -- as well as threats against Austrian and foreign politicians.
 
Germany also has a warrant out for his arrest, according to media reports. Mohamed M. left Austria for Germany shortly after being released from prison in 2011, but fled again to Turkey before he could be extradited home.
