Artifacts discovered in penthouse in Turkey

Antique documents and calligraphic art found during the cleaning of a penthouse in the central Anatolian province of Konya were presented to the Konya Manuscripts Museum yesterday. The director of the library, Bekir Şahin, said manuscripts found in the trash were also often brought to the library, and that people were becoming more sensitive about these issues.

He said the objects delivered to the library included lots of Qurans, a 200-year-old piece of calligraphic art and the equities of Konya-based company that operated during World War I. “Most of the Qurans are worn out, but there are also ones in good condition. We will repair all of them to put in the library. They are very important to us,” he said.

Konya’s Selçuk University Faculty of Communications member Associate Professor Caner Arabacı said bringing such documents to a library showed that people were conscious about culture.
“The equities belonged to a Konya textile company. They cost five Ottoman lira,” Arabacı added.
