Art galleries opened for writer and poet

On the 24th anniversary of the death of famous Turkish writer and poet Cemal Süreya, two art galleries dedicated to him have been opened in the Akköy and İbrahimpaşa villages in the Central Anatolian province of Nevşehir’s Ürgüp district.

Established by Professor Nergis Canefe along with local artisans to serve artists and art lovers, the galleries are named Üvercinka, a poem by Süreya, which is also the name of a book collecting his first poems. A photography exhibition was also opened Jan. 13 in the galleries. The exhibition displays 30 photos, taken by Zeytin Photography Amateurs Association (ZEYFOD) members Aydan Tortop, Demet Tığın Hakman, Emel Semizoğlu, Güvenç Uğuz and Sabriye Çelik. The photos feature the life in Burhaniye and its surrounding. Becoming the first villages in the Cappadocia region to have an art gallery, Akkoy and İbrahimpaşa drew considerable interest with the opening of the galleries and the exhibition. The exhibition will remain open until April 12.

The art galleries will also serve as a space for Turkish and foreign artists to work. Süreya was a member of the Second New Generation of Turkish poetry, an abstract and postmodern movement. Love, mainly through its erotic character, is a popular theme of his works. He died in 1990.
