Anti-ISIL envoy holds meetings in Baghdad

U.S. President Barack Obama’s Special Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) Brett McGurk was in Baghdad on March 3 to hold talks. 

The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad said in a statement that McGurk arrived in Baghdad to meet with senior Iraqi government and security officials, along with representatives from the U.S.-led coalition. 

“During his meetings, Mr. McGurk will discuss the coalition’s ongoing support for Iraqi-led efforts to defeat ISIL, as well as other regional developments,” read the statement issued on March 3. 

McGurk’s visit to Kobane, Syria, in February caused fury in Turkey when he met with representatives of the People’s Protection Unit (YPG), the military wing of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD), which Turkey regards as a terror organization.
