Another GMO goods import claims revealed in northwestern Turkey

Turkey’s Customs and Trade Ministry announced they had received information about another importation of genetically modified organism (GMO) goods in the northwestern province of Tekirdağ, after 21,000 tons of GMO rice were recently seized in Mersin province.

Customs and Trade Minister Hayati Yazıcı said they had investigated other ports and they were informed that GMO imports had been made from Tekirdağ. Prosecutors have begun an investigation into the case, he added.Tat Bakliyat, Tiryaki Agro Gıda and Göze Tarım are the companies whose imported rice was seized due to GMO allegations. However, they denied claims.

A court has decided to arrest six people, including Tat president Şerafettin Memiş, after 21,000 tons of GMO rice were seized in Mersin province.
