Ancient graves ignored in Mersin
MERSİN - Doğan News Agency
Four rock-carved tombs were unearthed in 2009 in Mezitli, home to the ancient city of Soli Pompeiopolis, during construction work. Scent bottles, teardrop bottles, coins, seals and hand-printed tools were found in one of the tombs and were delivered to a museum.
The ancient tombs, which have not been protected well since then, have been completely covered by weeds so they can no longer be seen. The tombs have also received damage from unidentified people, which has caused reactions from locals living in the neighborhood.
“We were very excited when these tombs were unearthed because they can shed light on the history of the ancient city. But they are covered in weeds due to ignorance. These tombs are priceless; they should serve Mezitli’s tourism. It is not enough to register such structures. Officials should make environmental arrangements and open them to visitors,” said a local, İsmail İnce, who called for officials to take measures to protect the cultural heritage.
