AKP’s election bureau set ablaze in southeastern Turkey

Unidentified men have set ablaze the ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) election bureau in Veyselkarani town of the Baykan district in the southeastern province of Siirt late May 20.The election bureau of the ruling AKP in Siirt was set on fire by unknown men around 08:30 p.m. on May 20 who entered the building by breaking the lock of the bureau’s door.
The fire was brought under control by locals who spotted the flares as some of the party’s flags and handouts turned to ashes.
The police forces increased security measures for the surrounding area of the bureau and the searching for the assailant is ongoing.
Nimetullah Gönül, the AKP’s provincial head in Baykan, said he learnt about the incident after he left the bureau for evening prayer and that he saw the bureau set ablaze and its door forcibly broken.
“We wish the elections to be fair in a democratic environment. We are sad with these kinds of incidents. We condemn this attack which also targets the democracy,” he added.
