AKP to intervene in court case

An Istanbul court has accepted an appeal from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) to be an intervening party in an ongoing trial of suspects accused of establishing anti-government Internet sites.

The 13th Court of Serious Crimes ruled yesterday that the AKP was a victim of the alleged crime in the “Internet Memorandum” case and could intervene in the trial process. The case is based on an alleged document from the General Staff about setting up 42 Internet sites to distribute propaganda against the AKP, the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), Greeks and Armenians. Retired Col. Dursun Çiçek, who is currently on trial in four different alleged coup-plot cases, is the top suspect in the case, which was earlier merged with the case regarding the Action Plan for the Fight against Fundamentalism.

That plan allegedly includes strategies to end both AKP rule and the activities of the Fethullah Gülen community, a religious group believed to have links to the government.
