Ömer Aslan, a city council member from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), has been elected the acting mayor of Yalova where local elections results were cancelled.

The Yalova City Council, which consists of 18 members from the AKP and 13 members from the main opposition Republician Peoples’ Party (CHP), gathered on May 5 to elect the acting mayor, who will occupy the post until the elections are conducted again on June 1.

Aslan was elected in the third run of the polls with 18 votes, while the CHP members cast blank votes.
After the CHP members demanded information, it was revealed that one invalid vote in the first run was cast for Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The AKP won Yalova by a single vote according to the initial results of the March 30 elections, only for the victory to be awarded to the CHP following a recount.

The Supreme Electoral Board (YSK) canceled the results of the local elections in Yalova on April 21 following an appeal from the AKP. The YSK said seven votes were cast by people who were not permitted to do so by law.
