Turkey won its first gold medal in the European Wrestling Championship currently taking place in the Georgian capital, Tbilissi, tonight with Taha Akgül in the men's freestyle under-120-kilogram category.The defending champion defeated his Ukrainian rival Alen Zaseev in the final in three periods. Akgül wiped out his rival in the first period, winning 6-0 points.
After losing the second period 2-1, Akgül came through in the last period with the same score, bringing declining Turkish wrestling a much-needed success. Akgül also won the gold medal in last year’s European Championship in Serbia.
