Aftershocks hit Turkey’s southwestern provinces

Medium-intensity aftershocks hit southwestern Turkey a number of times yesterday following a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Muğla’s Fethiye district on June 10.A total of 203 quakes, all between magnitudes 1.7 and 5.0, were recorded over a span of 18 hours, the Turkish Prime Ministry’s Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD) announced.
Elsewhere, two earthquakes, one of magnitude 4.4 and the other 3.6, hit the Aegean province of Kütahya yesterday but did not cause any serious damages.
The first quake happened at 8:06 a.m. local time, while the second occurred at 9:51 a.m.
On June 10, the Fethiye quake struck at 4:44 p.m. off the small holiday resort of Ölüdeniz although there were no immediate reports of casualties or injuries.
On Oct. 23, 2011, a powerful quake shook the eastern province of Van, killing more than 600 people and causing heavy damages.
