A new project aims to turn Sinop into a large peninsula

With a new project, there are plans to turn the Black Sea province of Sinop, which is a peninsula, into an island in order to make the city a center of attraction.

“Scientific work will be carried out first,” said Sinop Gov. Ahmet Cengiz, adding, “In this way we want to make the city a center of attraction in Turkey and in the world as well.”

A project similar to “Channel Istanbul,” which Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced last year for Istanbul and was defined as a “crazy project” in public opinion, is on the agenda for Sinop, which has become a current issue in recent years with the establishment of nuclear and thermal plants. The project has caused excitement in the city, which has a population of 204,000.

The Governor’s Office has started working to divide the city into two. “As a result of the evaluation of scientists, we plan to turn Sinop into an island through a channel or tunnel in the narrowest point of the city. It is very important for tourism to turn it into an island city. We need to promote Sinop to Turkey and the entire world because there is a great potential. We need to draw attention to the city’s unique structure along with its history, culture and nature. In order to realize this, a scientific work will be carried out and then the project will be realized,” Cengiz said.

Cengiz said Sinop was a brand in tourism. “The city’s material and cultural values should be brought to light. One of them is to realize this project. The city always has tourism potential, but the project will increase the importance of this potential.

Cengiz said scientists would decide from which part the city would be divided into two, and a tunnel or channel would be constructed in the narrowest part to pass to the other side of the city.
