900 convicts released after new package

In accordance with the recently adopted third judicial reform package 900 convicts whom the new regulation favored and whose enforcement could be suspended were discharged yesterday.

The files of the convicts, whose conditions complied with the changes made within the law, are under examination. It is estimated that a total of 3,200 convict will be discharged by means of the new regulation.

Deputy Prime Minister Beşir Atalay said July 10 that around 10,000 people currently held in jail, but not convicted of crimes, will be released thanks to a recently adopted legal arrangement which extends the scope of judicial control measures. With the adoption of the reform judges will be able to implement judicial control without a maximum limit, rather than relying on detention. “A new judicial control mechanism has been installed, so according to our estimates 10,000 people will benefit from the judicial control mechanism. It has also sped up the trial process,” Atalay said.
