41 wounded in 50-car pileup due to thick fog in southeastern Turkey

A total of 41 people have been wounded in a 50-car pileup that occurred near southeastern Turkey’s main city Diyarbakır in the morning hours of Jan. 6 due to intense fog and ice.

The huge chain-collusion on the Diyarbakır-Şanlıurfa highway, which involved trucks, buses and ambulances in addition to cars, miraculously did not cause any fatalities, Doğan News Agency reported. Many who were injured in 15 separate accidents on the same road were transferred to the nearest hospitals in Diyarbakır. 

Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality has warned locals to drive with precaution. “The temperature is two below zero and humidity is high. Visibility has dropped to 50 meters due to thick fog. We call on those who will take the roads to be vigilant and drive at slow speeds,” the municipality said via Twitter. 
Traffic at Diyarbakır airport has also been interrupted due to the fog. 

Thick fog has prevailed across Turkey during the last few days, disrupting many flights in Istanbul and İzmir. Foggy weather on Jan. 6 led to the suspension of maritime transportation across the Bosphorus in Istanbul.
