15 detained over student clashes in Ankara

Security forces launched simultaneous operations on the houses of students who were allegedly involved in student group clashes at universities in the capital Ankara last month.

The Ankara Counter-Terrorism Police Department (TEM) raided the addresses of the identified students, who were allegedly involved in clashes at Ankara University and Hacettepe University, Doğan News Agency reported.

Some 15 students were detained as a part of the operation. Most of the students were from the Faculty of Political Sciences at Ankara University.

The students were detained for “coercion and malicious wounding on behalf of an illegal organization and disturbance of the right of education and training.” The suspects were taken to the Ankara Police Department to give statements.

A clash of rival student groups at Ankara University on Feb. 26 had left a security officer and a student injured. Some 43 of the 46 people who had been detained by police for being involved in the clashes were released after being questioned by a prosecutor, while three students were taken to the Ankara Police Department as a part of a probe into the shooting of the university’s security personnel.
