Americans wounded in Mexico were CIA employees: report

Two Americans wounded when their US embassy vehicle came under fire in Mexico were employed by the Central Intelligence Agency as part of an anti-drug task force, The New York Times reported Wednesday.
 
The two were driving with a Mexican navy captain to a military training facility south of Mexico City on Friday when their armored US embassy vehicle was fired upon by federal police, Mexican officials.
 
Authorities were holding 12 police officers in the shooting, which is under investigation.
 
US officials told the Times on condition of anonymity there was no evidence so far the Americans, who have not been identified, were targeted because of their affiliation.
 
The Times said the Americans were CIA employees sent to Mexico as part of an interagency US task force helping Mexico bolster its counter-drug efforts.
