Alligator, snake skin smuggler caught at Istanbul airport
ISTANBUL – Doğan News Agency
Turkish customs agents apprehended an Istanbul-bound passenger carrying 99 snake and three alligator skins on Oct. 13 during a routine procedure.
The passenger, arriving in Istanbul from Singapore, was carrying skins worth up to 120,000 Turkish Liras, which he was allegedly planning to sell illegally.
The smuggled material included the skin of an anaconda snake.
The suspect has been taken to the Bakırköy Chief Prosecutor’s Office and an investigation has been opened against him on smuggling charges.
Snake and alligator skins are relatively expensive in Turkey and can be bought for lower prices in other countries, prompting many smugglers to try to sell them illicitly in Turkey.
