The current situation regarding abortion law is fine and banning abortion would bring huge damages, Nursuna Memecan a deputy from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has said.“If there is an increase in Caesarean sections we should raise the public’s awareness of the benefits of normal [vaginal] delivery. We should also raise awareness about the reasons and consequences of abortion. If abortion is banned it is not going to end the practice. It will continue in illegal ways,” Memecan, the AKP’s Sivas deputy, said.
“The current regulation was fine, banning abortion brings a major harm,” Memecan said.
“I do not think that to ban abortion will do any good, especially if it’s banned completely this will be too harmful. It does not disappear if it is banned. It goes underground and inexperienced doctors will be in charge, which will be another trouble for women. This risks women’s lives,” Memecan said.
Hard decision
She also said not many women undergo curettage easily. “No woman wants to go under the knife out of the blue. This is already a very hard decision.” Memecan said.
Ankara’s anti-abortion initiative has been severely criticized by Turkish and international human rights organizations.
