8 detained in Gezi raids in southern Turkey

Eight people have been detained in operations at 20 addresses in the southern province of Mersin in connection to the Gezi Park protests.

Those detained were sent to court in the neighboring province of Adana.

The raids in Mersin are part of the latest wave of detentions that began on July 30 in Ankara, İzmir, Samsun, Mersin and Tunceli as the government seeks to crack down on the societal ferment caused by authorities’ decision to brutally crush opposition to redevelopment plans in Istanbul’s Taksim Square.
