45th anniversary of US astronauts' Moon landing
This July 20, 1969 file photo shows US Astronaut Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr., lunar module pilot of the first lunar landing mission, as he poses for a photograph beside the deployed United States flag during Apollo 11 Extravehicular Activity (EVA) on the lunar surface area called the Sea of Tranquility. The Lunar Module (LM) is on the left, and the footprints of the astronauts are clearly visible in the soil of the Moon. On July 16, 1969, NASA astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins launched toward the moon atop a Saturn V rocket. Four days later, on July 20, Armstrong and Aldrin landed their Eagle lander at Tranquility Base on the moon as Collins remained in orbit aboard the command module. The 45 year anniversary of the landing will be marked on July 20, 2014. AFP PHOTO / NASA/HANDOUT

One experiment involved the inner composition of the moon, and another tried to determine the exact distance from Earth. Collins, now 83, the command module pilot who stayed behind in lunar orbit as the gatekeeper, spent decades sidestepping the spotlight. He's making an exception for the 45th anniversary where he plans to take part in a NASA ceremony at Kennedy Space Center on Monday, July 21, 2014, to add Armstrong's name to the historic Operations and Checkout Building. his July 20, 1969 file photo provided by NASA shows Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong on the lunar surface. Apollo 11 astronauts trained on Earth to take individual photographs in succession in order to create a series of frames that could be assembled into panoramic images. This frame from Aldrin's panorama of the Apollo 11 landing site is the only good picture of mission commander Neil Armstrong on the lunar surface. Armstrong and fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin spent nearly three hours walking on the moon, collecting samples, conducting experiments and taking photographs. In all, 12 Americans walked on the moon from 1969 to 1972. (AP Photo/NASA, Buzz Aldrin, File)
