Russia carries Hezbollah fighters to Syria, FSA head says

General Salim Idris, the head of the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) has said he had completely lost hope in the arrival of Western military aid for the Syrian revolution, in an interview with Anadolu Agency.

“We cannot understand the attitude of the West. They first promise to lift the ban on arms sales to Syria, and then they give up,” Idris said referring to the recent averse statements of the United States, the EU and France concerning supplying arms to the Syrian opposition.

Evaluating the recent situation of the civil war in Syria, Idris said progress of the regime on some fronts was due to the intervention of foreign powers in the country.

Pointing to the military aid by Russia and Iran, Idris said, “Russia and Iran help supply 400 tons of ammunition to the Syrian regime once every ten days. The Russian cargo ships stopping by Beirut port carry Hezbollah fighters to [western Syrian province of] Tartus.”

While acknowledging that the regime had made gains on some fronts, Idris denied that the situation was “definitely in favor of the regime.”
