Radio host fined by RTÜK for criticizing officer’s rape

The host of a radio show on Turkey’s Medya FM station has been fined by the country’s media watchdog for expressing on-air criticism against a police officer that allegedly raped a Russian woman.

Adem Metan, the host of radio show “Sabah Panayırı,” was fined 1,102 Turkish Liras, while his show was suspended by the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK).
 
Russian citizen P.A, who was taken into custody during an identity check at a night club in Istanbul, was allegedly raped twice by a police officer at Taksim Police Station
 
"A commissar committed rape at a police station; when the woman didn’t make a sound, he did it a second time [but] was caught. That means that if she hadn’t made a sound until the morning, the guy would have continued all night. What if I tried the same thing?” Metan had said on air.

RTÜK suspended the show and fined Metan on the grounds that his comments were "against gender equality and encouraged abuse and suppression against women."
 
Metan paid the fine himself before quitting his job at Medya FM.
 
Metan had been a radio host for six years and had won awards for his work in the past.
