Abdülhakim Ayhan from Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), the district mayor of Akçakale in Şanlıurfa province, visited the town center with his entourage on Sept. 19.
As the convoy was leaving the neighborhood at 11:00 a.m., a group of cars blocked the road. According to local media reports, unidentified men then came out and attacked Ayhan’s armored car, shooting at and battering it.
The mayor’s bodyguards dispersed the assailants in the attack in which Ayhan was not harmed. His official car, however, was heavily damaged.
The mayor testified at the Akçakale Police Station following the attack.
An investigation has been launched into the incident. Ayhan’s car was similarly attacked in the town center in 2015.
