Erdoğan visits sites of Taksim mosque construction, Atatürk Cultural Center demolition
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan visited late June 1 the site of the ongoing mosque construction in the historic Taksim Square and the nearby area where the demolition works of Istanbul's iconic Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM) were recently completed. Turkish President Erdoğan talked with the locals in Istanbul's Taksim area late June 1 and presented the badges of his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) to some of the citizens.
The mosque, which began to take shape in 2017, is expected to open for prayer this year. When completed, its height, excluding the minarets, will be around 30 meters—the same as the two historical churches in the area.
Demolition works at the nearby Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM), on the other hand, were completed on May 30. Here is the story of the demolition in the photos taken by Nazlı Sanberk in the past three years...
