Earthquake damage system in ancient mosque amazes visitors
The two rotating columns of the ancient Bostancı Mosque, in southeastern province of Gaziantep, are more than just wow factors that draw tourists. (DHA Photo)
The turning columns, one of which is still functioning, are parts of an age-old mechanism that alerted locals if the mosque has suffered from any damages during earthquakes.
Abdulkadir Evişen, an architect who examined the mosque dating back to the 16th century, said that there are only four mosques across Turkey with this mechanism.
After an earthquake occurred, the columns pointed to the parts of the structure that were damaged.
