A property developer called the experts when he noticed the ruins during the groundbreaking work to build new villas on a one-hectare plot on Bodrum’s Poyraz Street three weeks ago, Doğan News Agency reported on June 14.
Bodrum Underwater Archaelogy Museum Director Tayfun Selçuk and three more archaelogists started to work in the area last month and confirmed that the underground ruins belonged to the villa of Phainos, who lived in the 2nd century AD in the ancient city of Halicarnassos.
A Roman bath, some marble work that was deemed luxurious back then, a well, pottery, fishing equipment and perfume bottles were also unearthed.
The greatest discovery at the site, however, is a 20-square-meter mosaic depicting a fisherman and large fishes.
Turkish archaelogists also discovered 10 tombs and human remains at the site.
“Phanios was the most famous fisherman in history. The first findings about him was discovered in Halicarnassos in the 1890. More of his mosaics were found in 1992 in the ancient city center. What has just been found is an invaluable heritage that should be shared with the world,” retired archaelogist Candan Temizel told the agency.
Archaelogical work at the construction site will resume on June 18 as the findings were moved to Bodrum museum.
