Parliament to talk peace commission tomorrow

ANKARA

Deputy Prime Minister Beşir Atalay will address the parliamentary debate on peace commission.

Parliament’s General Assembly will tomorrow debate a proposal introduced last week by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) to monitor the ongoing peace process.

Deputy Prime Minister Beşir Atalay will deliver a speech in which he will elaborate on the government’s stance on the issue. Afterwards, representatives of the three opposition parties, as well as a deputy representing the ruling party group that introduced the proposal, will take the rostrum to speak about the same issue. After then, voting will take place.

MHP, CHP reject idea of commission

Both the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) have already categorically rejected the proposal for the establishment of a parliamentary investigation commission, which is aimed at responding to demands by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP).

Both the PKK and the BDP maintain that the planned retreat of the group’s militants would not be possible without legal guarantees.

Also Tuesday, Parliament will debate the “Bill on Amending Some Laws within the Context of Human Rights and Freedom of Expression,” which has been dubbed the “fourth judicial package” and aims to remedy structural problems in the Turkish judicial system that are related to European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) rulings concerning violations of human rights in Turkey.
