The governor’s office in the southeastern province of Şırnak has become the first state institution to use the term Kurdistan in an official document. In a written statement to remind truck drivers that they will need a new document to export goods to Iraq, the Habur Border Gate Administration, represented by a deputy governor, said the “Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government” could send trucks back to Turkey if they lack proper documents.
The statement further referred to the region as IKBY, the acronym in Turkish for “Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government.”
Turkey has been officially using “Regional Kurdish Administration” or “Northern Iraq” to define the region, avoiding usage of the term “Kurdistan.”
