Istanbul to suffer from power outages for another day

ISTANBUL

Electricity blackouts were still ongoing in Istanbul on Jan. 2, as officials say Turkey’s largest city and nearby provinces will continue to suffer from power outages on Jan. 3.

Electricity distribution company AYEDAŞ, which operates on the Asian side of Istanbul, announced that it would not distribute electricity to some parts of the city’s Ataşehir, Beykoz, Çekmeköy, Pendik, Tuzla, Ümraniye and Üsküdar districts on Jan. 3.

The Turkish Electricity Transmission Company (TEİAŞ) and Sakarya Electricity Distribution Company (SEDAŞ) also issued a statement about power outages in the Marmara province of Kocaeli, saying the cuts were related to bad recent weather conditions.

The two companies stated that slush had caused ice on electricity transmission lines to become heavier, causing the breakage of lines and insulators and the toppling of the transmission tower.
 
Meanwhile, the Organized Industrial Zone in the Marmara province of Kocaeli was also affected by power outages. A number of factories and workplaces suspended their work in the Gebze and Dilovası districts of Kocaeli on Jan. 2, sending home their employees, Doğan News Agency has reported.

Power outages also affected water distribution systems elsewhere in the Marmara region, with unplanned and sudden power outages reportedly harming water pumps.  

The Turkish Automotive Parts Industry Association (TAYSAD) has announced that the country’s automotive industry has incurred losses worth almost 300 million euros due to power outages, which have been ongoing for five days.
