Fire breaks out in Manisa jail after inmates set cell on fire to protest administration

A fire broke out at a jail in the Aegean province of Manisa Oct. 4 during the transfer of one inmate from a different cell, officials of the Manisa E-type closed prison said.
 
The 12 other inmates sharing the cell protested the prison administration’s decision by setting the mattresses on fire, which led to the quick spread of the flames and prompted the evacuation of the ward.
 
Fire engines were immediately dispatched to the prison. “The inmates who caused the incident were neutralized. There were no injured and only one inmate who was affected by the smoke was transferred to the hospital,” the statement said.
 
The fire was extinguished in a short time after the arrival of the fire brigades.
 
Main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) deputy Özgür Özel informed relatives of inmates that there was no cause for concern, after examining the scene.
