The undercover police unit of the Ankara Security Directorate patrolled among the partying crowds in the street of Kızılay neighborhood, as well as around the AŞTİ bus terminal, checking the IDs of 312 people.
The six suspects who were detained were sought by police over crimes including sexual abuse and extortion.
Thirty-two others were escorted away from the festivities due to their “excessive behaviors disturbing the people around,” the report added.
Turkey entered 2019 without any serious incident reported during the late night festivities.
In Istanbul’s İstiklal Avenue, which was one of the most popular destinations to celebrate the New Year as always, the “Trust Teams” of the police had stopped two sexual harassers while in action.
Footage of one of the arrests was released in which plainclothes police officers intervened seconds after a group of young men started to verbally abuse a couple of women.
