CHP will present its own presidential candidate: Deputy group leader
ANKARA
Main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Deputy Group Chair Özgür Özel has refuted rumors suggesting that the İYİ (Good) Party and the CHP will present Meral Akşener as a joint presidential candidate, saying the CHP will present its own candidate in the June 24 snap election.
“The CHP’s candidate will be determined at the party assembly tomorrow [April 24],” Özel said on April 23 in an interview with Habertürk TV.
He added that the resignation of 15 CHP lawmakers to transfer to the İYİ Party in order to facilitate the latter’s participation in the election “only aimed to ensure the İYİ Party’s participation in the election.”
“If Akşener is to be a candidate, we only tackled the obstacles to her candidacy,” Özel said.
The CHP lawmakers resigned from their party on April 22 and joined the İYİ Party in a bid to secure the latter’s participation in the election and its ability to present a presidential candidate without legal constraints.
The CHP will convene its party assembly on April 24, during which its candidate and alliance principles will be determined.
