Koray Çapoğlu was one of the victims. Çapoğlu came to Suruç from Trabzon, a Black Sea city known as a Turkish nationalist stronghold, to support the SGDF campaign aiming to help rebuild the Syrian Kurdish town of Kobane, which had largely been destroyed by ISIL attacks in recent months.

As such, Çapoğlu was a taboo-breaker. He was known to have participated in the Gezi Park protests in 2013 with his Trabzonspor flag. In Suruç, he died with that flag.

Turkey first learned Cebrail Günebakan’s name when he was detained in a rather unusual way in the southern province of Adana last year. A policeman was photographed while forcefully opening the 24-year-old’s mouth. Günebakan, who previously organized donation campaigns to gift toys to local children, was among the victims of the Suruç bombing.

Ferdane Kılıç (L), a provincial assembly member from the Kurdish problem-focused Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in Bursa, was killed in Suruç with her son, Nartan Kılıç (R). Her daughter, Sinem Kılıç (C), was wounded in the terror act.

Okan Pirinç was only 17 years old. The high school student had come to Suruç from the southern Turkish province of Hatay.

Hatice Ezgi Sadet, 20, was a student at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in Istanbul. “We are going to the revolution,” she had exclaimed on her Instagram account while leaving Istanbul for Kobane via Suruç. She died in Suruç.

This picture tells a story we still don’t know. Two young women were photographed while holding each other’s hand in the immediate aftermath of the Suruç bombing. They have still not been identified nor do we know whether they survived or not.

Çağdaş Aydın’s last message on his Facebook account was a call to his friends to visit and support the mourning families of the victims of the Gezi Park protests, the Reyhanlı bombing, the Uludere (Roboski) air strike, the Soma and Ermenek mine disasters, as well as past mass killings in Çorum, Sivas, Maraş and Gazi.

Alper Sapan, a 19-year-old victim from the central Turkish province of Eskişehir, was a conscientious objector. “Before militarism kills us, we should kill militarism,” he had once written in a statement he posted online.

Çağdaş Küçükbattal, 28, was the first Gezi Park protester who lost his eye. On May 31, 2013, police shot him in the eye in Istanbul. He survived the Suruç attack, too. He was injured, though, with a broken leg and shrapnel pieces in his body.

Another second-time survivor was Sabahattin Pişkinbaş. He was also injured when a bomb exploded at the local HDP headquarters in Adana on May 18.

A bomb exploded in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa’s Suruç district on July 20, killing at least 32 people. The target of the suspected Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) attack was a meeting of the Federation of Socialist Youth Associations (SGDF).
