Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya said on Feb. 7 that the death toll rose to 11. 13 people have been rescued alive from the rubble of the building in Kartal district.
The building in the Cevizli neighborhood had residents inside when it collapsed on Feb. 6, according to eye witnesses.
A man and a woman, who were trapped under the rubble, were pulled alive almost an hour after the collapse. Others were rescued later as the efforts also continued on Feb. 7.
Zeki Dağ, a local official, said the building had 14 apartments and 27-30 residents were inside when it collapsed.
According to the governor, the top three floors of the building were constructed without permission.
A team of 86 rescue workers and 26 fire trucks were dispatched.
Prosecutors have begun an investigation into the incident and an Istanbul court issued a broadcasting ban, the country’s top broadcasting authority, the Radio and Television Supreme Council, said in a statement.
