200 Syrian migrants, Turkish captain stopped off Marmaris

Some 200 Syrian migrants and a Turkish captain were intercepted by Turkish Coast Guard teams as they attempted to cross to the Greek island of Rhodes from the touristic Turkish town of Marmaris late on Dec. 24.A wooden gullet was carrying the group, mostly women and children, “for 4,000 dollars per person,” according to local reports.
Coast Guard teams offered food aid to the migrants, who were subjected to medical examinations after they were brought to shore.
The detained captain has denied the accusations that he was transporting the group to Greece illegally.
The Syrian migrants will be sent to a refugee camp in the border town of Hatay by bus, said officials.
